HI, I’M SHREEN EL MASRY, BODY INCLUSIVE PERSONAL TRAINER AND CERTIFIED INTUITIVE EATING COUNSELLOR.

 

my story started 10 years ago, when I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder.

IT ALL STARTED WITH DIETING.

 I became so obsessed by counting every morsel of food that went in my mouth. I was afraid to eat out, afraid of going off plan, and afraid of eating anything that I did not know the exact calorie amount.

THEN IT GOT WORSE.

I barely left the house; I wouldn’t go around to friends’ houses for dinner, and I wouldn’t go out to restaurants.

And then there were the really dark days that I prayed I wouldn’t wake up in the morning.

DIETING HAD TAKEN OVER MY LIFE.

And for years I had no idea that health and wellbeing was not equivalent to dieting. I always believed that all I needed to do was lose weight and exercise and I would be happy and healthy, because that is what the diet industry promises, right??

So many of us believe that if we can just get to our dream body and weight, then we will finally be happy once and for all right?

BUT I’M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT PURSUING THINESS MADE ME THE MOST SICKEST AND MOST MISERABLE THAT I HAVE EVER BEEN IN MY LIFE.

 

And then my worst fear happened. The weight started to come back.

No matter how much more I exercised and restricted, I couldn’t stop it happening, and every day I stood on the scale, it got higher and higher.

I thought it was my fault, I blamed myself, I thought my metabolism was broken.

I didn’t know at the time, but it was the dieting that had caused this. I thought I had failed. But the truth is diets failed me.

I only discovered this when I picked up the Health at Every Size book by Linda Bacon. As a side note, I highly recommend reading this ASAP. It was a game changer for my recovery. What the book did was delve into the science and the research.

 

I learnt that dieting:

Slows the rate at which we burn calories

Lowers our body temperature so we use less energy (and as a result may feel the cold more)

Increases our appetite

Reduces our muscle tissue

Hurts our psychological health and wellbeing

Leads to binge eating, preoccupation with food and in some cases eating disorders

Increases fat storage

Reduces our ability to feel hungry and to feel full

And they lead to weight gain – in fact in 95-98% of cases

I hear you! As that was my exact thought process too.

 

FINDING THIS MADE ME REALISE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE, THAT IT WASN’T MY FAULT.

And from here it led me down the path to learn as much as I could about Health at Every Size, intuitive eating, exercise, body image and mental health, and this is what led me to a full recovery.

Once I recovered, all I wanted to do was help others who might be going through what I went through, or even better, prevent them from going through it.

I decided to go back to university and train as a Health at Every Size/ Body Inclusive Personal Trainer and Certified Intuitive Eating Counsellor , and now I help women all around the world find their true purpose and identity outside of dieting, so they can finally live their lives without obsessing over their food, weight and exercise.
